dominated the recent runway trends in the world's fashion capitals

Starting this fall, there already is movement toward high-waisted, trouser-style pants, bow blouses and longer hemlines. The fabric moves away from the body instead of cinching it. Still, you can find skinny jeans and a short biker jacket if you want them.

That will be a harder task in the coming months, and fashion insiders say women are ready for the change.

With the looser silhouettes, white and tropical-hue colors, and a relaxed vibe, designers were showing both an optimistic attitude and a willingness to invest in design instead of gimmicks, they say.

“This comes after many seasons of maximalism and decoration, but no one wants to go back to ’90s minimalism,” says Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W magazine. “This is romantic minimalism.”

He adds: “When you look at fashion the last 20 years, there’s a lot of backward movement. You can’t find too many meanings in why you’re going back – last year was the ’80s – but, in the end, this season has a contemporary attitude to simplify and take away the ornamentalism and give freedom and romance to clothes.”

Catherine Moellering, executive vice president of the Tobe Report, a fashion retail trend consultancy, sees a little more purpose to the historical reference, though.

She said today’s global issues are similar to those faced in the 1970s.

But when it came to the clothes of that era, women were happy with their choices, she says, and the spring outfits that came down the runway have potential to appeal to a large audience.

In addition to the trousers, she expects shirtdresses, trenches, kaftans, printed scarves and floppy hats all to score well at retail.

And, Tonchi says, can’t you just imagine the racks of long skirts at H&M?

Shoppers, in fact, don’t have to wait for that to incorporate the trend into their existing wardrobe.

Color registers very quickly with consumers, Moellering says, so start wearing anything in tangerine, purple or orchid pink.

It doesn’t matter if the wearer is too young to remember Lauren Hutton, Ali McGraw or Bianca Jagger in their style heydays, she adds. There are plenty of teens and 20-somethings who know their fashion iconography.

Certainly, Yves Saint Laurent’s peasant collection was on the mind of many designers, which is familiar and relatable, and doesn’t have too strong of an urban voice, which can be a turnoff to some, Tonchi says. From an editorial perspective, the look is eye candy because it’s sexy and colorful, and lends itself to dramatic makeup and accessories, he says.

But strip away those things, and you’ll find that the ’70s influence is already on the street every day, says Bridget Foley, executive editor of Women’s Wear Daily. It’s the ethos of the modern wardrobe, she explains.

“When you see various retro things coming and going, the one with the greatest legs is the reference to the ’70s,” Foley says, noting that even the hippie looks so strongly associated with the 1960s actually went mainstream in the following decade.

“You take away the over-interpretation in hair and makeup, and those clothes make a lot of sense,” she says. “They are clean, wearable and pretty.”

Omega Launches Ladymatic in Beijing

Omega, the watch brand that astronaut Buzz Aldrin famously wore to the moon in 1969, unveiled the new Ladymatic collection today in Beijing, signaling its first serious effort to conquer the ladies' mechanical watch market.
 
Two years in the making, the Ladymatic borrows its name from an Omega model introduced in 1955 and its design sensibility from that era’s golden age of couture. The comparisons, however, end there. The modern version of the timepiece houses a robust Co-Axial caliber 8520/8521 within a round 34 mm case crafted from 18k rose gold, 18k yellow gold, or stainless steel, with or without diamonds. The movement features the innovative Co-Axial escapement designed in 1999 with the help of British watchmaking legend George Daniels.

“We felt there was a need for this,” Omega president Stephen Urquhart said. “The new watches are superb and they’ve been designed for women who have told us that they are as interested in the quality of our mechanical movements as they are in the style of the watches.”
 
Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, a brand ambassador since 2004, is the face of the Ladymatic advertising campaign shot by photographer Peter Lindbergh. Presiding over the launch, Kidman said she believed “all women want a beautiful watch, but not just for show.”

Showing off the rose gold bracelet style adorning her slender wrist, she continued: “It’s not very heavy, but it’s got weight, and it’s not a replica of a man’s watch.”

Luxury goods and services categories that captured a greater

According to the findings of a new Unity Marketing study, a higher percentage of luxury consumers headed to stores in the third quarter, but they spent less, with luxury consumer spending dropping a modest 1.4 percent.

The results of the latest Luxury Tracking Study, a survey of 1,200-plus affluent consumer households, reveal that luxury consumer spending fell from $31,665 per household in the second quarter of 2010 to $31,225 in the third quarter. The study also shows that ultra-affluents (those in the top 2 percent of U.S. households with incomes over $250,000) cut back even more, reducing their third-quarter spending by 11 percent from the second to third quarter.

Luxury goods and services categories that captured a greater share of affluent shoppers in the third quarter included luxury clothing and apparel, wine and spirits, fine dining, entertainment and travel. According to Unity Marketing, the study data indicates that while luxury marketers for the five categories above were able to attract a greater share of customers in the third quarter as compared to the second, they were not able to convert them into higher-spending customers.

The study shows that the only luxury goods category posting quarter-to-quarter growth was personal electronics, a category that Unity Marketing expects more affluents to turn to in the fourth quarter for holiday gifts.
